There is no standard 2-year bachelor’s degree in India. What students usually find under “2-year degree courses after 12th” are diplomas: they are quicker and cheaper and lead to entry-level jobs sooner. A 4-year B.Tech takes longer, but it is the professional engineering degree, and it is what unlocks engineer-level roles, GATE, M.Tech, PSU recruitment and study abroad.
If you need to start earning quickly, a diploma is a reasonable first step, and you can still join B.Tech later through lateral entry. If you already know you want an engineering career, going straight into B.Tech is the shorter path to the degree. The rest of this page explains the options, the trade-offs and a simple way to decide. Still choosing between engineering and medicine? See doctor vs engineer after 12th.
Bachelor’s degrees in India (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., BBA, BCA) run for three or four years, and B.Tech runs for four. The 2-year qualifications open to 12th-pass students fall into a few groups:
Some regulated professions have their own 2-year diplomas, such as D.Pharm (Diploma in Pharmacy) and D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education). They lead to specific jobs in those fields rather than to engineering.
The polytechnic diploma in engineering is a 3-year course after 10th. In many states, students who pass 12th with science can join it directly in the second year, which makes it roughly a 2-year course after 12th.
Under the UGC framework that implements NEP 2020, undergraduate programmes allow multiple exits: a UG Certificate after one year, a UG Diploma after two years, a bachelor’s degree after three, and an honours or research degree after four. Leaving after two years gets you a diploma, not a degree, though you can usually re-enter later to finish, subject to university rules.
Associate degrees are common in some other countries but are not a standard qualification in the Indian system, so treat any course sold under that label with care.
| 2-year engineering diploma (lateral entry) | 4-year B.Tech | |
|---|---|---|
| Time after 12th | About 2 years | 4 years (8 semesters) |
| Qualification | Diploma | Bachelor’s degree (professional) |
| Typical first roles | Technician, supervisor, junior engineer | Engineer, software developer, analyst, graduate engineer trainee |
| Cost | Lower; varies widely by state and institution | Higher; about ₹4.84 lakh over 4 years at ACE before hostel |
| GATE, M.Tech, PSU recruitment via GATE | Not directly; needs a degree first | Eligible |
| Study abroad (master’s) | Generally needs a degree first | Meets the 16-years-of-education rule many programmes use |
| Route to the other | Lateral entry into B.Tech 2nd year | — |
One useful number: going from 12th to a lateral-entry diploma (2 years) and then a lateral-entry B.Tech (3 years) takes five years, one year more than joining B.Tech directly. The diploma route makes sense if you need the earlier income or entry-level experience, not as a shortcut to the degree.
If you see yourself designing software, systems, machines or infrastructure, the B.Tech is the qualification employers hire engineers on. If the priority is a quick entry into work, a diploma gets you there sooner. The full case is in the benefits of a B.Tech.
A diploma costs less and pays sooner. Before ruling out B.Tech on cost, check scholarships and education loans; and remember lateral entry keeps the B.Tech open later.
M.Tech, an MBA after engineering, or a master’s abroad all start from a bachelor’s degree. If any of these are on your list, the B.Tech is the foundation. See M.Tech after B.Tech and engineering vs MBA.
Diploma holders can and do progress, but many senior engineering, design and management roles ask for a degree. If you are aiming high, the degree removes that ceiling early.
The B.Tech fee at Arya College of Engineering (ACE), Jaipur is approximately ₹1,21,000 per year, covering tuition, development fee and NAAC accreditation fee under the State Level Fee Committee order for NAAC-accredited colleges. That is roughly ₹4.84 lakh over four years, before hostel and mess. Fees can be revised under Government of Rajasthan rules, so check the 2026-27 fee structure for the current figure.
Eligible students can reduce this through ACE’s scholarship channels: merit scholarships, government schemes through the National Scholarship Portal and the Rajasthan state scholarship portal, and bank education-loan assistance.
ACE was founded in 2005, is AICTE approved, affiliated to Rajasthan Technical University (RTU), Kota, and holds the NAAC A+ grade. It is a constituent of Arya College.

There is no standard 2-year bachelor’s degree. The 2-year options are diplomas: professional ones like D.Pharm and D.El.Ed, a lateral-entry polytechnic engineering diploma, or the UG Diploma exit after two years of a UG programme under NEP 2020.
It gets you working sooner, usually in technician or junior roles. B.Tech takes longer but qualifies you for engineer-level roles, campus placements, GATE and postgraduate study.
Yes. Diploma holders can join B.Tech in the second year through lateral entry under AICTE norms. From 12th, that route takes five years in total, one more than a direct B.Tech.
About ₹1,21,000 per year, roughly ₹4.84 lakh over four years before hostel. See the fee structure and scholarships.
It can: GATE, M.Tech, many PSU and senior engineering roles, and most master’s programmes abroad need a bachelor’s degree. Lateral entry keeps the door open, but the degree removes the ceiling.
